My Name Is Sakula Banga

Contributions by: Stuart Stone
For Ages: 12 - 99
Set in Africa but with no set political or social context, Sakula Banga is the story of a young boy born under a star and a great promise. However his world is destroyed when his kingdom falls apart and under the control of a brutal leader ‘Shang’. Sakula is subsequently thrown into a whirlwind of events as he is torn from his family, kidnapped and then breaks free. He emerges a young adult trying to navigate his way through a dystopian environment where children are now beginning to raise themselves and establish control over chaos.

As the book continues, we follow Sakula as he unravels the riddles of his past; re connects with old acquaintances and grapples with his identity, beliefs and relationships. Sakula’s new path pushes him to test all his physical and mental powers as he tries to forge a new way forward for his people when they become confronted with their united enemy.

A powerful story, told by musician, activist and former child soldier Emmanuel Jal.
