About The Book

A bold, flavor-packed journey into Burmese and Southeast Asian cooking by two doctors who know the power of food to promote a healthy, happy life

BALANCE is a bold, flavor-packed journey into Burmese and Southeast Asian cooking, written by two doctors who know the power of food to promote a healthy, happy life. With 90 vibrant recipes, this cookbook proves that eating well doesn’t mean sacrificeit means variety, flavor, and pleasureoffering all three in abundance.

Burmese food—with Indian, Chinese, and Southeast Asian influences—is built on balance: every meal brings together fresh vegetables, pulses, nuts, fruits, fermented foods and just the right touch of preserved ingredients. The result is dishes bursting with salty, sweet, sour, bitter and umami flavors, layered with crunch, chew and comfort. It’s food that excites the senses while naturally supporting gut health and wellbeing.

As practicing medical professionals, Drs. Amy and Emily Chung (@therangoonsisters) have seen how diet can affect lifestyle—and have lived it themselves. Between long shifts and family demands, they discovered that Burmese-inspired cooking offered the perfect antidote: fast, flexible recipes that restore energy, bring joy, and fit into real-world routines. From zingy salads to nourishing noodle bowls and soul-warming curries, BALANCE makes healthy eating delicious and accessible. Supermarket-friendly ingredients, simple methods and plenty of adaptability mean these dishes work for every cook and every kitchen.
