Raves and Reviews

Allyson finds weaving to be "a kind of meditation - practiced in solitude with great focus." She enjoys weaving on a frame loom. There are 7 projects in this book, but all the basics are covered with tips and easy-to-follow photographs. If you have an interest in weaving, or want to try a new craft, this is a great place to start. Start by exploring fibres and tools, and then build your own frame loom. Allyson explains the equipment and yarns she uses and where to get them. You don't need to rush out and buy a huge loom; these little projects will teach you all about weaving. Small frame looms also have the advantage like knitting or embroidery, that they are very portable and are therefore handy to take in the car or when travelling. I especially like the Weaving With Yarn on Paper exercise and I can see some woven greeting cards in my future.

This book is aimed at complete beginners and describes how to construct and weave using a frame loom. The first chapter starts with basic definitions and the tools and materials needed to weave. Chapter two describes the frame loom before moving on to a discussion of Colour and Design in Chapter three. The following four chapters describe how to warp the loom, the principles of good weaving using a frame loom, different weaving patterns (plain, twill and satin weave), before moving on to rya knots and techniques for finishing the woven piece. There are full instructions for weaving seven items. The author specialises in weaving with a frame loom; providing hands-on advice on everything from which type of needle to use as a shuttle, to forks for beaters and her preferred make of scissors. Her writing style is clear and easy to understand, and the illustrations are excellent. The discussion of Colour and Design in Chapter three is particularly helpful to those new to choosing effective colour combinations. In fact, her experimentation of colour using card and paper samples would make an excellent project for children to understand colour. I like her references to sustainability in weaving, such as sourcing second-hand yarn at yard sales or via internet sites. In all, this is a well-presented and instructional introduction to weaving.
