About The Book

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER, UPDATED FOR A NEW GENERATION OF FANS!

From Melissa Anelli, former Editor-in-Chief of the legendary fan site The Leaky Cauldron, an unforgettable behind-the-scenes account of the Harry Potter phenomenon, the early internet, and the fans who changed the world.

Before Bookstagram and BookTok fandoms went mainstream, there was MySpace, chatrooms, message boards, and a handful of Harry Potter fansites known as "the Floo Network." As Editor-in-Chief of The Leaky Cauldron—the most popular of them all with over one million hits per day—Melissa Anelli had a front-row seat to the formation of a global community. Drawing on exclusive interviews, firsthand reporting, and a decade documenting the phenomenon from the inside, Anelli takes us on a personal journey chronicling the most influential fan movement of the twenty-first century.

Filled with behind-the-scenes revelations about the release of Harry Potter books and films, unforgettable fan stories, and insights into the early internet and rise of fan communities, Anelli captures a singular moment in pop culture history and celebrates the readers whose passion helped changed the internet, publishing, and the way books are read forever.

Now twenty years later, this updated edition includes a new Author's Note and bonus chapter as fans look ahead to a reimagined era of Harry Potter with HBO's forthcoming series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, premiering on Christmas Day 2026.
