About The Book

Mare of Easttown meets The Outsider in this twisty and “chilling crime thriller” (Luke Dumas, USA TODAY bestselling author) about a series of disappearances in a small, fundamentalist town and what one broken family must do to remain together as dark forces close in.

After losing her young son in an accident, Rachel Kennan throws herself into her career as police chief of a small Virginia town to avoid focusing on her grief. Meanwhile, her husband, Finn, a washed-up writer whose alcoholism led to the devastating tragedy that changed everything, struggles to redeem himself before his family completely falls apart. Their two daughters are the only things keeping Rachel and Finn together, but the girls have demons of their own.

At the same time, a disturbing crime rocks their tightknit, religious community, sending Rachel chasing leads in a place that does not take kindly to outsiders. When an ominous force in the forest starts calling to the children, fear spawns hate among the townspeople, placing the Kennan family directly in the line of fire. Left with no choice but to rely on each other, Rachel and Finn must come together to face threats inside and out.

Drawn from Appalachian folklore, Nowhere effortlessly solidifies Allison Gunn as “an assured new voice in horror” (Publishers Weekly).

"Unflinching, observant, and harrowing, in Nowhere, Gunn goes there… so let her take you. You couldn't have a better, more assured guide into the darkness." Emily Carpenter, author of Gothictown and Burying the Honeysuckle Girls

"A relentlessly unsettling, blood-stained portrait of small-town America’s dark corners, Nowhere conjures a roster of memorable characters then methodically turns the screws on them until one-by-one, they break in spectacularly horrific fashion. Fans of The Wicker Man and True Detective take note, Gunn mines similar rich veins of flawed, humanistic characters forced to confront their own personal Hells. This is real horror." —Collin Armstrong, author of Polybius

"Gunn knows how to generate tension, and this trip into the woods should enchant fans of Stephen King’s The Outsider as well as readers of supernatural thrillers."  —Library Journal

"Gunn proves herself an assured new voice in horror."  Publishers Weekly

"Alternately eerie and gory, this first novel has appeal for new and seasoned horror fans." —Booklist

"A chilling crime thriller steeped in blood and superstition. From murderous spirits to the terrors of a relationship at breaking point, Nowhere presents a nightmarish vision of small-town America where horrors supernatural, social, and marital collide. Parents will hold their children closer after reading this sinister and sharply drawn debut." —Luke Dumas, USA Today bestselling author of The Paleontologist and A History of Fear
