The Half Open Door is a very moving and illuminating account of an intellectual and spiritual odyssey to answer the question, ‘where are they; what has happened?’ - one we all must face when someone we love dies. He starts from his own deeply felt family experience of death - and two remarkable accounts of his own brushes with near death - and then embarks on an impressively rigorous, wide ranging, and candid quest to work out what is really going on. Whether you agree with his eventual conclusions or not, I found it an inspiring example of how we might go about pondering this difficult but most important of questions.
