Root Chakra

Embracing Your Feminine Origin

In this chapter we will explore feminine history and culture, the female body, and our connection to the primal energy of Mother Earth. You will look back at your female ancestors, embrace your feminine heritage, and deepen your sense of belonging here on Earth.

The root chakra is the vessel of our femininity. It represents our arrival in this world—our conception, birth, and early childhood. Located at the base of the spine, this energy center is directed downward, grounding us in the element of Earth and connecting us to Mother Earth herself.

The root chakra holds the energy of primal trust, safety, and security. No matter how turbulent and challenging life may be, this energy can restore our sense that life is fundamentally benevolent. Our ability to trust in life is shaped by our earliest experiences—whether we felt safe and accepted in the womb, during birth, and in our first years of life.

Through an energetic umbilical cord, the root chakra connects us to the heartbeat of Mother Earth—our primal mother—who loves and nurtures us unconditionally, weaving us into the great web of existence, into the fabric of all beings. Mother Earth embodies the archetypal feminine force.

In ancient cultures, particularly in matriarchal societies, the Earth was revered as the Great Goddess. For example, the Greek goddess Gaia was worshipped as the Earth Mother. She was depicted as a woman rising from the ground, inseparably bound to her essence—her original element. The Earth was seen as the creator and sustainer of all life. Birth, both human and animal, was regarded as a sacred act of creation, and the cycles of life and death were honored with deep reverence.

Conception was understood as more than just a physical process, it was seen as a sacred act. Women were believed to possess divine power, for they carried the ability to bring forth new life. We can return to this profound perspective.

BEING AT HOME IN YOURSELF

Today, many women feel disconnected, ungrounded, and are unaware of their roots. Fatigue, restlessness, sleep disturbances, constant busyness, avoidance, instability, emotional numbness, and anxiety are just some of the symptoms that can arise when our primal connection to the Earth is lost.

As long as we are in survival mode—because our existence feels uncertain or we don’t feel safe in our environment—we cannot fully step into our true potential. Only when we are rooted, when we establish a solid and reliable connection, can we open ourselves to life’s energies.

To walk the feminine path of blossoming, we must first fully inhabit our womb space. We must arrive in our own inner power, connect with Mother Earth, and from this deep sense of security, bring our creative impulses into the world. For women, this connection to the Earth and our bodies is essential. Only through this bond can our root chakra hold and channel life energy.

To be connected to the Earth means to be in harmony with nature’s rhythms and elements, to recognize ourselves as part of Earth, and to trust that the Earth nourishes and sustains us.

EXERCISE

Connect with the Womb of the Earth

Lie down comfortably. Place your hands on your chest and feel your heartbeat. Visualize an energetic umbilical cord extending from your heart, flowing through your womb, down to your root chakra. From there, it reaches deep into the Earth, through to the heart of the planet. Tune in to the Earth’s heartbeat. Feel your heartbeat synchronize with the Earth’s. Become one with the Earth.

Through this energetic umbilical cord, pure primal trust flows from Mother Earth into your root chakra. Visualize this energy as a red light. It flows into your yoni, filling your entire pelvic area. Warmth spreads through you. Breathe in and out deeply and relax. Absorb as much primal trust as you need until you feel completely full and nourished by it. Then, speak the following affirmations: I am connected, I am safe, I am here.

Many women struggle with their relationship with their bodies, feeling uncomfortable and disconnected. They measure themselves against idealized standards and are very self-critical. However, feeling at home in our own skin and accepting ourselves as we are is essential. Our existence begins in the body. It is the home of our soul and our love. To be present in our bodies with kindness means to be fully present in life.

Therefore, we say YES—yes to our appearance, yes to our weight, yes to our hair, our nose, our belly, our breasts. Yes to ourselves. When we do this, we can finally breathe deeply again and relax into our being.

Feeling safe and comfortable in our own body is the foundation for everything else: It allows us to surrender, to let go, and to feel deeply and fully.

Give Love to Your Body

Stand naked in front of a mirror, first with your eyes closed. Place your hands on your heart, take a few conscious breaths, and connect with the love within you. Then, open your eyes and look at yourself in your entirety with a soft, loving gaze. Make sure to keep your mouth slightly open, relax your tongue, and even hint at a smile.

What do you see when you look at yourself with heartfelt warmth? Let your gaze travel from your feet upward, taking in your entire body. If you notice yourself starting to judge, take a deep breath and soften your gaze again, making it gentle, open, and loving. You may gently touch the areas of your body you are looking at. Touch yourself lovingly, breathe lovingly, and observe yourself lovingly. When you have fully seen yourself, say these words: I thank you, my body, I bless you, I love you.

Participating in dance, yoga, sports, sauna sessions, or massage, really anything that helps you connect with your body and be present in it, is beneficial.

A wonderful way to strengthen body awareness is sleeping naked. I’ve been doing it for a few years now. At first, it felt unfamiliar, but it quickly became normal. This changes your relationship with your body and makes it easier to accept it. Your body is no longer confined by clothing; you set it free. Your skin can breathe better, and your yoni gets air too. Sleeping naked gives you the opportunity to touch yourself naturally and directly. For example, touching your breasts, which are associated with the heart chakra, the energy center of love, activates this chakra. Additionally, sleeping naked releases the feel-good hormone oxytocin, which improves sleep. Oxytocin also stimulates blood circulation, metabolism, and the immune system, and your body learns to regulate its own temperature. If your partner also sleeps without clothes, it can bring new energy into your love life.

FEARS, THE SHADOWS OF THE ROOT CHAKRA

Belonging, connection, and security are fundamental human needs—deeply tied to the root chakra. When we set out to grow and evolve, fears can arise, revealing the shadows of the root chakra.

The fear that our partner will turn away, that we’ll lose touch with our children, that we’ll be cast out from our community. The fear of being alone, of having to rely only on ourselves, of not being able to make it in this world. The fear that the life we’ve built will fall apart once we fully embrace our own power. Whether consciously or unconsciously, these fears live within us as women in many different ways.

The fear of losing someone on the journey back to ourselves can feel like an enormous obstacle. And whether or not it is actually justified, it has an undeniable impact. Generations of women before us lived through realities shaped by fear, and these ancient wounds are still present in our collective consciousness. This is how even a woman who is financially independent and socially well-connected might still, on a deep subconscious level, avoid confronting certain issues in her life—choosing instead to leave things as they are out of an unspoken insecurity.

Though letting go is an inherent part of our feminine nature, the fear of being left behind is something nearly all of us carry. In my work with women, this fear comes up again and again.

Fear suppresses our life force. Without a strong connection to the root chakra and, in turn, to the Earth itself, we become disconnected from our own bodies. We move through life from the mind, relying on masculine energy as we try to adapt to a society built on masculine structures. We search for energy outside of ourselves and become dependent on it—because we have lost touch with our own inner power.
