Clement Clarke Moore was born in New York City in 1779 and died in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1863. He was a scholar and writer of various topics, but is best known for his poem “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” which was first published anonymously in 1823 as “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” It was finally attributed to Moore in 1844 as a poem he wrote for his children.
