Matthew Smith

Matthew Smith was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1969, and moved to Hawaii in 1981. He graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in fine art and painting. Mathew has painted for as long as he can remember. His themes are varied, but the common thread throughout his work is a feeling of peace. Matthew paints inviting images he hopes will calm the racing mind. He says, “If my work can draw someone in and they can get lost in the piece and forget, even for an instant, then I have helped create a moment of peace. That is my aim.”
